Open Question: Does he like me?? Why does he keep sending mixed signals?

I'm a freshman in college and last semester, I got to be friends with my TA who's a senior. He and I have a lot in common and he helped me through a lot, but we always left our relationship as strictly TA to student- nothing more. This semester, he's no longer my TA and he's acting really weird!! He sent me a message both over Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks asking me how I was doing and how my holidays were, but when we got back to campus, when sees me, he acts like we barely know each other! The other week he saw me when I was alone and upset and questioned me for awhile to make sure I was ok. I asked him if we could meet to talk sometime and he suggested the cafe instead of the library where we had always met before. We had a really good talk, but now today I was with friends and saw him and he barely responded when I said hi. He hugs all of my friends, but has never even hugged me. Yet, I've also caught him staring at me from across the room a few times, but when he meets my eyes, he looks down really quickly... I can't figure him out!! What's up with him?!
